Nordic House News

Congratulations to past president Kari Mette Taylor and husband Barry on the recent celebration of their 40th wedding anniversary.

Keep 28 March 2015 free!!! There will be a social event held at Nordic House that evening – perhaps with a twist on our usual social barbecue theme. Full details will appear in the next edition of SCANPOST and on the website and Facebook but keep the date free regardless.

Next time you visit Nordic House, call into the library. The Association has an extensive range of books in all Scandinavian languages, across many genres, all available for member loan. VHS videos tapes are also available for those with this equipment. Regrettably however, the Association is no longer able to accept donations of VHS video tapes from members.

The Association continues to fundraise through its sales of the non-stick barbecue liner. This idea is the most economical and cleanest alternative available wherever a non stick cooking surface is required.

The liner is non toxic, odourless and will not absorb any flavour. It always provides a clean surface to cook on. Simply place the liner on your barbecue when you start cooking and remove it when you have finished. After use, remove any residue with a paper towel or a damp cloth if necessary. And then use the liner again and again. For orders, contact Marianne on 9295 4248. For more product details, http://simplydelightful.com.au

At the AGM, a request was received to publish a detailed account of the Association’s expenditure on utilities incurred at Nordic House. A list of the Association’s outgoings for council rates, rates and water usage, and electricity usage for the last financial year has been posted for those interested at Nordic House.

Fastelavn

Er mit navn, boller vil jeg have, hvis jeg ingen boller får, så laver jeg ballade……!

2015_02_05 FastelavnThis year’s Fastelavn picnic will take place on Sunday 15 February 2015. This traditional Danish celebration has its origins in an old heathen custom. It is a carnival much loved by children who get to dress up in costume and to hit a wooden barrel specially made for the occasion and decorated with black cats. Prize winners will receive the traditional fastelavnris and there will be lolly bags and icy poles for all children.

Come along at 3.00pm to join the fun of this festival, to be held at Nordic House. Children can wear costumes if they wish. Bring your family and friends, your picnic lunch, drinks, your aerogard, sunscreen and chairs.

Tea and coffee facilities at Nordic House will be available for the usual $3 charge.

Who will be Kattekonge this year?

Stambordet

This Danish group meets on the first Wednesday of each month at 6.00 pm at the Squire Bar, Generous Squire Brewhouse, Shafto Lane, 397 Murray Street, Perth. No entrance fee is charged.

If you are interested in attending, please RSVP on dagbo.net or email Rasmus on rnielsen.victoriapark@ljh.com.au

From the Committee

The end of the year was the usual social whirl of events leading up to Christmas.

2015_02_05 FTC1Another lovely Over 50s Christmas Lunch was enjoyed back in November with lots of delicious food, presents, a visit from Santa, a raffle and good company. Thanks to Annette for coordinating the day and to everyone for bringing the beautiful food to share.

Around 90 kids and adults attended the Christmas Party and Lucia Parade on 72015_02_05 FTC2 December, a greater turn-out than the previous year. We celebrated with Christmas music, walking around the tree, presents and a great Father Christmas. Thanks to Per Hansen for stepping into the role at such short notice.

Again we are grateful to Karen Margrethe for delivering the music, and Hella and her helpers for doing kitchen duties and the delicious hot dogs. And thanks to everyone who came to help set up and take down the decorations. We could not have done it without them.

2015_02_05 FTC4Another of our photos from the evening shows four generations of Edith Christensen’s family: Edith, daughter Ilse, grand daughter Katy and great grand daughter Bianca, a 2014 Lucia girl. Ilse, Katy and Bianca have all taken part in the Association’s Lucia Parade over the years.

Our Christmas celebrations concluded when Bente Holdgaard, the Danish priest based in Sydney, came over for our annual Christmas service and we enjoyed a gathering after the service in the new church hall in Northbridge, chatting and buying lollies, over tea, coffee and cookies.

One of the Christmas elves has done some work at Nordic House over the holidays, so next time you visit for coffee and cake, or maybe to take a roster, see if you can see what has been done.

And so a new year has begun and our first social event will be to celebrate the children’s festival Fastelavn on 15 February at Nordic House. Come along to hit the barrel, play some games and eat delicious fastelavns boller. And, if the kids want to dress up, they can do that and add to the spirit of the occasion.2015_02_05 FTC3

A specially-convened subcommittee has been preparing a survey for members about the future of Nordic House. This will soon be sent out to all members and we encourage you to send your response and have a say in Nordic House’s future viability.

As always, we look forward to your active participation at Nordic House and your attendance at the many events planned for 2015.

With best regards
The Committee
