From the Committee

On 9 April, a meeting was held at Nordic House to discuss the result of the 2015 survey which asked members questions regarding the future of Nordic House. Twenty members attended and the meeting was positive and discussions realistic. It is clear from falling membership that we do have to try to increase and maintain members.

A small group of members have volunteered their time to form a subcommittee, which will work on how to best promote the club. Their result will be presented at the next AGM on 13 August at Nordic House. We will put into place their recommendations over the next year and then assess the situation, and see how the member numbers are doing.

On 4 May, 15 members and their invited friends enjoyed an interesting presentation on Fremantle Ports by Jeanette Murray, the Fremantle Ports External Affairs Coordinator.
Jeanette’s presentation included the history of the port ranging from its initial construction through to its modern operation and other varied functions and activities.  Slides were shown about the development of the main port and some of the Scandinavian ships that have used the port. A visit to the observation deck at the Fremantle Ports Administration Building followed the presentation.

Our autumn social barbecue, held on 14 May, attracted around 31 people who enjoyed the plentiful spread organised by Susanne and helpers. Many thanks go to all the shoppers and helpers. At the barbecue, we welcomed back our former president, Merete and her children, Kristina and Christopher, who have recently returned to Perth after 6 years away living in Denmark.

In spite of inclement weather, a few members bravely attended the busy bee on 22 May. Some members brought their children who tried to help or just enjoyed the swings. Many thanks to them all.  Thankfully the showers held off for most of the time and we were able to complete much of the planned maintenance. This included redirecting reticulation pipes and further paving with slabs, donated by Nola Cray. Drainage from the southeast downpipe was diverted away from the building and repairs were carried out to door knob mechanisms. Other maintenance included corrosion protection of a lintel near the new underfloor gate.

In the garden, leaves were cleared, some pruning done and the inside of the House cleaned. Delicious home-baked Danish cake was provided for morning coffee and the customary pølser and meat balls were enjoyed for a tasty lunch.

We have a busy month coming up and hope to see you at the next couple of events. On 18 June, we will celebrate an early Skt Hans with a small bonfire and witch in the garden at Nordic House. Please come along and support your Association. There will be hot dogs and gløgg for sale, as well as tea and coffee and soft drinks available. We shall hold a raffle and would be grateful for any donations for this.

On 16 July, a quiz night has been organized by Niels and Lyn Dahl, so come along and test your wits. You can either book a table for 6 at $5 per person or join a table when you come. Please arrive at 6.30 pm as the quiz will commence at 7 pm. You can BYO supper if you wish, but there will be coffee and cake available for the usual charge.

Our annual AGM will be held at Nordic House on 13 August commencing at 3 pm. You will receive the agenda, last year’s AGM minutes and nomination forms prior to the date, either by email or post. Please make an effort to attend as the future direction of the
Association is in your hands.

And remember, the Association cannot survive without your membership. Please renew your membership which is due on 1 July promptly.

We look forward to you joining us at these events in the coming months.

With best regards
The Committee

2015 Survey on the future viability of Nordic House

The results of the 2015 survey to investigate the future viability of Nordic House, requested at the 2014 AGM, will be sent to members of the Association in the coming month. It was not possible to present these results at the 2015 AGM as all members of the sub-committee, formed to look into this issue, were overseas at the time.

Members are requested to appraise themselves of the results and feedback from the survey and, if seeking clarity or wishing to provide further input, attend an informal meeting and discussion to be held at Nordic House on 9 April at 3 pm. It must be stressed to members that no action can be taken on this survey without further discussion and formal voting at a future AGM or extraordinary members’ meeting. It is vital however, for planning purposes, that the committee has a sense of direction from the Association as it is not growing and is struggling to have members take an active role in its running.

You are urged to examine the results and give careful consideration as to how you want the Association to “look” in coming years.

Skt Hans Bonfire 2016

skthansaftenThere are currently no coordinators for the 2016 Skt Hans bonfire to be held at Nordic House in June this year.

The Committee is calling upon members to nominate to run this event. Full details of procedures are available and, with a team of helpers, it is a very easy event to run. If you are interested in taking this event on, please contact one of the committee members immediately.

In the event that no members nominate to coordinate and run this event in 2016, it will regrettably be cancelled for this year.
